Only Lovers Left Alive is a 2013 British-German
vampire film written and directed by Jim
Jarmusch, and starring Tom Hiddleston, Tilda
Swinton, Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt, and Jeffrey
Wright. The film was nominated for the Palme
d''Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.
Jim Jarmuschs ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE tells the
tale of two fragile and sensitive vampires, Adam
(Tom Hiddleston) and Eve (Tilda Swinton), who
have been lovers for centuries. Both are
cultured intellectuals with an all-embracing
passion for music, literature and science, who
have evolved to a level where they no longer
kill for sustenance, but still retain their
innate wildness.
Adam, a reclusive underground musician hiding
out in the ruins of contemporary Detroit,
despairs about human civilizations decline, and
worries about future survival. Eve, who is
perhaps 3000 years old to Adams 500, takes a
longer view of history and is more optimistic.
She leaves her home in the ancient city of
Tangier to come to his side.
As blood has been tainted by the zombies
(humans), the formerly immortal Adam and Eve
must secure uncontaminated blood from hospitals
or they will perish. Eves close friend,
Elizabethan dramatist and unacknowledged author
of Shakespeares playsChristopher Marlowe (John
Hurt), is now an elder vampire who provides Eve
with hospital blood. Adam gets his supply from
Dr. Watson (Jeffrey Wright), a skittish
hematologist who provides safe blood at a price.
Adam and Eves precarious footing is further
threatened by the uninvited arrival of Eves
carefree and uncontrollable little sister Ava
(Mia Wasikowska). Unlike Adam and Eve, Ava
hasnt yet learned to tame her wilder instincts,
and her recklessness concerns Adam.
Driven by sensual photography, trance-like
music, and droll humor, Jim Jarmuschs ONLY
LOVERS LEFT ALIVE is a meditation on art,
science, memory, and the mysteries of
everlasting love.
Reviews
A beautifully understated take on the saturated
Vampire subgenre
by Paul Bryan
From the moment I heard that Jim Jarmusch was
working on a vampire film I was intrigued and
was desperate to see what the result would be.
It did not disappoint for a second.
Enchantingly atmospheric, it centres around Adam
and Eve, two age-old vampires whose marriage has
endured centuries of humanity''s slap-dash
efforts at building worthwhile civilisations.
It strikes a very unusual tone for a film in
this genre, although fans of Jarmusch will be
used to a certain amount of genre-straddling and
refusal to make easily pigeon-holed films. Don''t
come into this expecting a plot driven film, or
especially not a CGI gore-fest akin to a lot of
the lazily produced horror/fantasy material that
seems so abundant at the moment. The focus is
much more on creating an authentic feel and
intriguing characters. Tom Hiddleston and Tilda
Swinton are virtually infallible in convincingly
playing world-weary characters who have lived
through plagues, inquisitions and the
development of a flawed modern society.
Mia Wasikowska''s arrival as Eve''s volatile
sister Ava is foreseen with a palpable sense of
foreboding, providing an uneasy counterpart to
Adam and Eve''s relative level-headedness, and
steps up the stakes for the final act.
John Hurt also deserves a mention for his
typically assured and accomplished performance,
albeit in a relatively small part.
Overall, an extremely adept piece of filmmaking,
which has revitalised a genre which I, for one,
was about ready to call time on.
